Manfred Schwartz
Heribert Kossmann

Dr Manfred Schwartz was born in 1960. He studied chemistry at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich/Germany and joined BASF in 1987 as a research chemist, working in the field of polymer dispersions for the construction industry. He worked for BASF in South America between 1992 and 1994. He moved to the dispersions marketing department in 1995, where his responsibilities include exterior paints and coatings.

Heribert Koßmann was born in Cologne/Germany in 1928. He worked in the paint industry from 1947 to 1969. In 1958, he earned a degree in Coatings Technology from the textile engineering school in Krefeld/Germany. He joined the BASF AG, Ludwigshafen/Germany, in 1969. There he worked in coatings application technology, specializing in acrylic dispersions and additives. He was the technology manager of BASF Corporation’s technical center in Charlotte, North Carolina between 1991 and 1993. He retired in April 1993.

Latex paints can be formulated from a variety of polymer dispersions. This article compares the properties of acrylic and acrylic/styrene dispersions when used as binders in such paints.
The films formed from these dispersions absorb little water. Acrylic/styrene films are more permeable to water vapour than straight acrylic ones.
There is no difference in the performance of acrylic and acrylic/styrene latices in mat paints formulated for use outdoors.
